Former Orange County Board of Education Chair Brenda Stephens has been named president of the North Carolina School Boards Association in a decision that took place last week.
Stephens, who has served as a member of the School Board for 15 years, was replaced as chair on May 6 by Will Atherton in a vote that was split 4-3 down gender lines.
Stephens was elected to the position during the Delegate Assembly at the NCSBA Annual Conference. According to the release sent out by Stephens, the NCSBA is governed by a 27-member Board of Directors, and led by four officers. In North Carolina, there are 777 school board members in 116 school boards.
“It is an honor and privilege to have the trust of my fellow members to lead this outstanding organization,” Stephens said in the release.
