An attempted carjacking south of Hillsborough Thursday led to a perpetrator pulling out a handgun, demanding the driver’s keys, and shooting at the man’s back window when he refused to hand them over, according to a release sent out by Alicia Stemper, Director of Public Information and Special Services for the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
The victim, who was unharmed, made a 911 call at 11:37 a.m., according to the release. The suspect quickly fled the scene before Orange County Sheriff’s Office deputies and investigators arrived at the victim’s house.
The carjacking occurred in a cul-de-sac close to the intersection of Davis Drive and Ode Turner Road, south of Hillsborough and west of Interstate 40, according to the release.
The assailant was a young male with a black and white shirt and white shorts. He approached the victim and stated, “Give me the key to your truck,” before firing his gun and shattering the victim’s back car window, according to the release.
Once on scene, a deputy attempted to follow the tracks of the perpetrator with the help of a K9, but the track was lost about half a mile down Davis Drive. According to the release, there is suspicion that the assailant could have fled the area in a vehicle, with the help of an accomplice.
Orange County Sheriff Charles Blackwood released a statement regarding the attempted carjacking.
“This type of crime is always scary and always dangerous,” the statement reads. “But this was in broad daylight, indicating a boldness on the part of the perpetrator that concerns us greatly. If you see something that looks out of place, trust your instincts and call 911.”
The investigation is still ongoing and authorities are urging citizens to call Investigator Dylan Hendricks at 919-245-2051 if they see a man matching the description of the assailant, or if they witnessed someone entering a car off Davis Drive.
This is a developing story and will be updated further.
