Brunch attendees will partake in mystical entertainment at this time, including juggling performances, peacocks and tarot card readings.

The Hillsborough Orange County Chamber of Commerce will mark this year’s summer solstice with an imaginative brunch on June 23 that will celebrate strides currently being made in local agriculture.

“For 2019, we identified a goal of promoting agriculture in Orange County as it’s always been and will likely always be, one of the major economic impacts of the County,” Kim Tesoro, the chamber’s chief executive officer, said in an email. “The upcoming Summer Solstice Vanity Fair is designed to educate visitors about the innovations in modern farming, whether techniques, crops or use of land.”

“Summer Solstice Vanity Fair Brunch...circa 1890” will be held on the grounds of Merry Hill Farm, an event venue, Orange County Bicentennial Farm and industrial hemp farm in Mebane.

Hemp is one of the newest crops to take off in North Carolina after the 2018 Farm Bill legalized its growth in all 50 states. Merry Hill is a licensed industrial hemp grower and registered processor with the North Carolina Hemp Commission, and even has a hemp sommelier on the team.

The brunch event will feature a presentation of futuristic farming practices coming in 2020. The idea is to celebrate local farmers and highlight the advances and changes happening in area farms, while also enjoying fresh food and magical entertainment.

“Farming is fun and today’s approaches are so creative and almost sci-fi like in many instances,” Tesoro said. “We hope that the visitor will enjoy their afternoon at Merry Hill Farm and be inspired to support our local farmers and agriculture based businesses.”

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., attendees will feast on a brunch prepared by Chef Joel Bohlin and Chef Justin Cole of Village Diner. Guests will also partake in mystical entertainment at this time, including juggling performances, peacocks and tarot card readings.

In a fusing of the past with the future, organizers are inviting attendees to wear Edwardian finery. The event will also be open for the public to explore free of charge after the brunch, from 2 to 5 p.m.

Tickets for “Summer Solstice Vanity Fair Brunch...circa 1890” are available at and cost $150 per person for VIP seating, $75 per person for general seating and $15 per person for children 12 and under.
