The Hillsborough/Orange County Chamber of Commerce will host their Annual Meeting Gala and Awards Ceremony on Friday, Feb. 1 at Croasdaile Country Club in Durham,
Acclaimed Chef, Television Host, and Cookbook Author Vivian Howard will be the Keynote Speaker at the ceremony, thanks to support from Presenting Sponsor Collins Design-Build, and Platinum Sponsors Desert Harvest, Edward Jones Investments and GlobalRX.
Born in Deep Run to tobacco and hog farming parents, Howard's upbringing was steeped in the Southern food traditions of her neighbors. She honed her culinary skills and love for food working in the kitchens of some of New York's most esteemed restaurants and training under some of the most cutting-edge chefs from Scott Barton of Voyage, to Wylie Dufresne and Sam Mason of WD-50, and later with Jean Georges Vongerichten at his critically-acclaimed Spice Market.
Howard is best known for her award-winning restaurants in Kinston, Chef and the Farmer, followed by the Boiler Room, and Benny's Big Time Pizzeria in Wilmington, as well as her award-winning documentary PBS television series, A Chef's Life, celebrating Eastern North Carolina food traditions. Now after five seasons, a Daytime Emmy, Peabody award, and James Beard award for Outstanding Personality/Host, Howard will be launching a new series PBS series in 2019, an hour-long, primetime show telling food stories of the American South in the context of global food traditions. Howard has also published an award-winning cookbook, Deep Run Roots: Stories and Recipes from My Corner of the South.
The event begins at 6 p.m. with a Cocktail Hour featuring the swinging jazz sounds of Tea Cup Gin. Following Howard speaking, the Chamber will introduce the 2019 Board of Directors and honor members for outstanding commitment to our partnerships and with our community. Thank you to our Gold Awards Sponsor Merry Hill Farm. Silver Entertainment Sponsor Ashby Insurance Agency – State Farm brings us local favorite, The Hillcasters featuring Jim Parker, to wrap up the evening.
Hillsborough/Orange County Chamber CEO, Kim Tesoro, notes, “Howard’s goal has been to showcase the people and traditions of Eastern North Carolina, and to find ways to share the tastes of the south with the world. Many of our members recognize the importance of inviting visitors to enjoy our small town charm, and remain committed to thoughtful growth. We are looking forward to hearing from Vivian Howard about the ways her brand has positively impacted her community and people that live there.”
