The Cone Fabrics smokestack at Granite Mill Property is begin repaired by the International Chimney Corporation.

The International Chimney Corporation (ICC) has begun repairing the iconic Cone Fabrics smokestack at the Granite Mill Property.  The smokestack was built in the 1940’s. Its purpose was to vent the four enormous boilers in the adjacent Boiler House; the Boiler House was built in the 1920’s.  The smokestack stands 153 feet high. It is constructed out of yellow brick throughout except red brick was used to spell “Cone Fabrics” vertically on the face of the smokestack.

The repairs are necessary to save the smokestack and to prevent injury.  Since the mill closed in the 1990’s, the deterioration to the mortar joints of the yellow brick near the top has been so extensive that several bricks have fallen to the ground and the threat would continue without these repairs (see included photos taken from an aerial drone).  The restoration includes repairing the extensive cracking, repairing the mortar joints, and installing steel bands and a steel cover on the top to prevent deterioration in the future. To perform this work, ICC has constructed a temporary ladder and platform on the face of the smokestack and will use a crane.  The crane is a 110 ton crane with a 165 foot boom and can reach 210 feet.

ICC is the largest independently owned company of its kind that specializes in the design, construction and repair of tall masonry and steel structures throughout the United States and internationally and has operated since 1927.  It is based in Williamston, NY. Some of its previous restoration work in North Carolina includes restoration of the Cape Hatteras lighthouse in Buxton and restoration of “Old Baldy,” the Bald Head Island lighthouse. ICC also restored the Lucky Strike Chimney at the American Tobacco property in downtown Durham, NC.

“The Lofts on Haw River” is the $44 Million historic renovation of the former Granite Mill Finishing plant in Haw River, NC into 175 luxury apartments and approximately 7,000 square feet of commercial space.  The Lofts on Haw River will offer studios, one-, two- and three bedroom types. Residents will enjoy modern amenities such as a saltwater swimming pool, a 2,000+ square foot fitness center and yoga room, and high-speed Internet throughout the campus because the entire community is wired with fiber.  The property sits adjacent to the scenic Haw River; greater than fifty percent of the apartments offer direct views of the river from their living rooms. It is expected that the first apartments will be available for occupancy by the end of December 2019 and construction will be complete by March 31, 2020.

The project is being developed by D3 Development, Inc. based out of Durham, NC.  D3 Development previously developed “The Lofts at White Furniture” in Mebane, NC.  Further, D3 Development’s founder and president, Michael Hill, redeveloped the American Tobacco historic complex in Durham, NC while he was employed by Capitol Broadcasting Company.  The American Tobacco project was the largest historic renovation project in the history of North Carolina.
