The Board of Commissioners is encouraging support of Hillsborough’s small businesses by declaring November “Shop Small Business Month” and Nov. 30 “Shop Small Business Saturday.”

Mayor Tom Stevens read the proclamation — which was unanimously supported by the board — at a work session Monday.

“Maintaining interesting community-based shopping and dining experiences is important for being able to remain a vibrant and authentic place,” Stevens read.

Partnering with the Hillsborough/Orange County Chamber of Commerce, the Hillsborough Tourism Board, and the Hillsborough Board of Commissioners, local businesses are asking residents to “Shop Small, Shop Local and Shop Often” in November.

“We’re always looking for ways to support our small business community,” Economic Development Planner Shannan Campbell said. “We’ve been participating in ‘Shop Small Saturday’ for a few years and thought it might be good to really encourage our residents and visitors to spend their dollars here throughout the month of November.”

Hillsborough is kicking off the month with free samples of Whit’s Frozen Custard and Matthew’s Chocolates. On Friday, Nov. 1, Campbell will pass out samples from 3 p.m. until they’re gone on the lawn of the Historic Orange County Courthouse, near the corner of East King and South Churton streets.

Local businesses appreciate your support.
