Orange County Sheriff's Office

HILLSBOROUGH, NC (January 30, 2018)- Orange County Sheriff’s Office Investigators arrested 32 individuals suspected of drug violations as a result of an undercover operation begun in October 2017.  The operation targeted the full range of distribution occurring within the County from the street level up to Mexican Cartel sourced drugs.  Drug distributors at the State level were also a focus of this investigation as the Sheriff’s Office partnered with the Raleigh DEA Task Force, the Raleigh-Durham FBI Safe Streets Task Force, the U.S. Marshal’s Joint Fugitive Task Force, and the State Bureau of Investigation.  Officers from the Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Hillsborough Police Departments were also instrumental during the investigation.

Investigators employed search warrants and controlled buys during the course of the operation, leading to arrests on both State and federal charges.  These cases led officers into the city limits of Hillsborough, Carrboro, Chapel Hill, and throughout the County.  Orange County Sheriff Charles Blackwood commented, “The operation was a collaborative effort between numerous agencies, as well as other divisions within the Sheriff’s Office, and members of the affected communities.  It is important to continue to focus enforcement efforts on the sale of illegal narcotics given that many other crimes are driven by the drug trade.  Removal of this criminal element improves the quality of life for everyone in our community.”  Investigators seized 5,540.23 grams of Cocaine, 3,682.59 grams of Marijuana, 20 grams of Psilocybin Mushrooms, 32 grams of Heroin, 162 dosage units of prescription medication (Oxycodone, Adderall, Xanax, Morphine, Fentanyl, Suboxone), and 6 firearms.

In total, warrants for the arrest of approximately 40 individuals for 110 felony and 30 misdemeanor charges were obtained.  Investigators continue to search for the balance of suspects who have not yet been arrested.  Anyone with information regarding the illegal sale and distribution of controlled substances is encouraged to contact Investigator BK Wilkerson at 919.245.2900.
