HILLSBOROUGH— Tina Renee McCullock Lowe passed away Sunday, April 5, 2015. Tina was born July 9, 1981, to Kathy Diane McCullock Chambers of Graham and the late Tony Wayne McCullock of Cedar Grove.Tina is survived by sons Christian, Aiden, Skylar and Jackson; daughter, Addison; stepson, Gavin; sisters, Amanda Andrews of Siler City and Joni McCullock of Cedar Grove; nephews, Cody, Aaron, Trey and Gabriel; nieces, Elizabeth and Hannah. Tina basked in the knowledge of God. She took advantage of every opportunity to tell those close to her that she loved them.Tina had an infectious laugh easily recognized by those that knew her. Tina loved her family and church. Most of all, Tina loved her husband, Derek, and her children. Tina is greatly loved by her family and will forever be in their hearts.A memorial service of her life was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 11, 2015, at the Hillsborough Pentecostal Holiness Church, 117 West Hill Ave. South, officiated by the Rev. HILLSBOROUGH —Mr. Edwin Richard Johnston of Hillsborough passed away Saturday, Nov. 8, 2014. He was born in The Bronx, N.Y., on April 19, 1933, to Lawrence and Charlotte Johnston. He married Eleonore Anna Kohler on Sept. 12, 1954, and they had four children. Edwin was also well known for more than 50 years for helping people who have lost their sight, by treating them with kindness and taking a real personal interest in them while making their ocular prosthetic. He truly was loved by many for his kind and generous spirit, which he would attribute to applying biblical principles in his everyday life. Lisa, his youngest daughter, has continued in the Ocularistry occupation.His daughter, Eva Smith Jacobs Johnston, and grandson, Gabriel Jacobs, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Eleonore, of 60 years, and other children, Dawn Hull and her husband, Timothy, Bruce Johnston and Lisa Johnston, grandchildren, Danielle Smith Jones and her husband, Douglas, Alicia Hull Cyrus and her husband, Will, Shawn Hull, Brittany Hull, Melissa Hull, Daniel Johnston, Hannah Johnston, Carmen Varriano, great-grandchildren, Cameron and Dalton Jones, his brother, Donald Johnston and his wife, Margie, and their children and grandchildren .There will be a memorial talk in his honor May 2, 2015, at 2 p.m. at the newly constructed Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 518 Dumont Drive, Hillsborough, NC 27278.
HILLSBOROUGH— Mrs. Carolyn Hart LeCates, 71, died Wednesday, April 15, 2015, at Rose Manor Healthcare Center. Mrs. LeCates was born in Durham County, the daughter of the late Bayman Clyde Hart and Minnie Ruth Martin Hart and wife of the late Silas “Sonny” David LeCates. She attended First Assembly of God in Durham.Mrs. LeCates is survived by her son, Michael David LeCates and wife Tyretta; daughter Tracy Renee LeCates; three grandchildren, Thomas McAdams Holmes III, Mikayla Lynne LeCates and Cody Lee Gainey; brother, Bayman Clyde Hart Jr. and wife, Carol; sister, Jane M. Carpenter; brother, Dwight L. Hart and wife, Jeannie, and many nieces and nephews.A funeral service was held Sunday at Clements Funeral Chapel officiated by the Rev. Denver Shelton. She was laid to rest in Maplewood Cemetery. HILLSBOROUGH— Charles William Snipes, 89, passed away at Alamance Regional Hospital in Burlington on Thursday, March 12, 2015. Charles Snipes was born July 12, 1925, to James Mason Snipes Sr. and Carrie Teer Snipes. He was a lifelong resident of Orange County in the Orange Grove community.
HILLSBOROUGH —Mrs. Anne Rogers Coleman, 88, passed away March 14, 2015, at Brookshire Nursing Center. She was born in the Carr community of Orange County. She was the daughter of the late Guy and Blanche Rogers. She was also preceded in death by her son, Harry Coleman, three brothers, James, Lawrence and Vernon Rogers, and three sisters, Elizabeth Brigman, Polly Roberts and Martha Sartin.
HILLSBOROUGH — Donald Dority, age 70, born March 13, 1944, passed away peacefully on Feb. 14, 2015. He was born to the late John and Rosa Dority. He is survived by three sisters, Joann, Janie and Lindy; nieces, Willie Mae Harris and Gracie H. Wheeley; great nieces and nephews, Amy H. Ascher, Jill C. Cook and Cory G. Collins, Mark Dority, Dale Dority and many others. Thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Bill Brooks and Wesley Woods and family for their kindness to Donald over the years.
CEDAR GROVE — Herman Durant Harrelson, born June 22, 1943, died March 1, 2015, at the V.A. Hospital in Durham.
CEDAR GROVE — Sarah Terry Webster, 61, of 8708 Bama Road, died Sunday, March 1, 2015. She was born in Person County and was the daughter of the late Coy Franklin and Nellie McCullough Terry. Mrs. Webster worked at the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, where she served as the quarter master. She loved helping the sheriff’s department and churches with fundraisers. Mrs. Webster also loved camping, farming, and was an avid seamstress and Nascar fan. She attended Lamb’s Chapel.
WHITE CROSS — John Oscar Cecil Jr. passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on March 1, 2015. He was the son of the late J. Oscar Cecil Sr. and Ercell W. Cecil. He is survived by the love of his life, wife, Patricia Cecil; son, John “Tommy” Cecil (Allyson); daughter, Jamie Cecil Minnis; sister, raised as a daughter, Dovie Jo Cecil; four grandchildren, Jared and Brad Buddington, Joshua and Lauren Cecil; and a nephew, who was like a grandson, Ricky Cecil Curlee; sisters, Mary Harris (Keith) and Ann Curlee (Steve).
CHAPEL HILL — Michele Teer, 35, of Chapel Hill passed away Saturday, Feb. 28, 2015, at her residence. She graduated from Orange High School in 1997 and was employed at Bud Matthews Service. Michele had a beautiful smile and loved to make people laugh.
HILLSBOROUGH — Bryant Kelly Warren Sr. ‘B.K.’, 85, of Efland died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2015, at Duke Medical Center surrounded by his family, and friends. Bryant Warren was born in Efland, Nov. 14, 1929, to the late Lizzie Berry Warren and Adolphus Fitzgerald Warren.
HILLSBOROUGH— Billy Anderson Trice, 76, son of the late James Trice and Martha Trice, was born May 12, 1938.He died Feb. 16, 2015, at Alamance Health Care Center. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 21, 2015 at noon at Chavis-Parker Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be Saturday, Feb. 21, 2015, from 11 a.m to noon in the Chavis-Parker Funeral Chapel.
HILLSBOROUGH — Everett Hayes Kennedy, 87, of Hillsborough passed away Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2015, at his home. He was born Feb. 19, 1927, in Hillsborough, to Grover Cleveland and Minnie Briles Kennedy.
DURHAM — Kathleen Godwin Smith passed away peacefully at her home on Feb. 14, 2015. She was born March 8, 1919, in Durham the third of six children of Gus Travis Godwin and Lelia Lowe Godwin from the Lowe’s Grove community in southern Durham. Kay grew up in a lively household, was a member of Lowe’s Grove Baptist church, graduated from Lowe’s Grove High School and studied at Watts Hospital School of Nursing in Durham. When duty called in 1942, she joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. She served with the 65th General Hospital, known as the Duke Hospital Unit, in East Anglia, England, during World War II. On July 22, 1944, she married E. Francis Smith and after the war returned home to Durham.
ROXBORO — Elma Laws Hawkins, 98, of 2417 Laws Store Road died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2015. She was born in Person County and was the daughter of the late Hubert and Birdie Blalock Laws. Mrs. Hawkins was also preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Homer Hawkins; one daughter, Dianne Hankins; three sisters, Era Laws Carr, Evelyn Laws Parker, and Ellen Laws Wilkins; two brother-in-laws, Willard Hawkins and Frank Hawkins; and three sister-in-laws, Nannie Odom, Sarah Norris, and Lottie Lynch. She was a member of Walnut Grove United Methodist Church where she served as treasurer and taught Sunday school for over 40 years and was a member of the United Methodist Women.
EFLAND — Mrs. Rozelle Elizabeth Warren Crabtree, 92, died Friday, Feb. 13, 2015.
EFLAND — Mr. Christopher Sawyer Andrews, age 25, a former resident of Morgantown, W.Va., died on Feb. 14, 2015.
HILLSBOROUGH— Mr. Maryland M. Ray, 76, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2015, at his home. Mr. Ray was born in Orange County, the son of the late Dallas Ray and the late Maggie Roosevelt Baldwin Ray. Prior to his retirement, he was a Sergeant with the Hillsborough Police Department for 13 years, worked at Durham Regional Hospital for 14 years and Clements Funeral Service, Inc. for 24 years. He was a member of Fairview Baptist Church. Mr. Ray enjoyed spending time with his grandkids and watching them participate in sports. He was a volunteer for sporting events at Orange High School. Mr. Ray was preceded in death by his wife, Betsy Martin Jones Ray; and two sisters, Betty Lee Murray and Mary Frances Moree.
HILLSBOROUGH—Kenneth Dale Bateman, 53, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2015, at his home in Hillsborough. He was born Dec. 3, 1961, to the late Arthur Eugene Bateman.
HILLSBOROUGH—Alma Trynis Nichols died Friday, Jan. 30, 2015, at The Hock Family Pavilion in Durham. She was born Sept. 5, 1920, in Orange County to Charlie and Bertha McBroom. She was married to C.B. Nichols on Aug. 26, 1945.
CEDAR GROVE — On Feb. 3, 2015, Charles Hughes Williams, 93, went home to his heavenly father. He grew up on the family farm in Cedar Grove where he was able to embrace his love of nature and animals. Charles was a successful baseball player during his years at Efland High School. During World War II, a love for traveling grew as he saw the world during his service in the Merchant Marines. He met the love of his life, Lillian, while in port in New Jersey. They raised four wonderful children and for 62 years continued their love of travel with many trips throughout the U.S. He served as an elder at Eno Presbyterian Church for many years. He became an avid collector and seller of old toys and enjoyed participating in toy shows with his son.
EFLAND—Carrie Camelia Compton Lloyd, age 82, of Efland passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Friday, Feb. 6, 2015, after an extended illness. She was born on May 12, 1932, to the late Ralph and Carrie Compton.
HILLSBOROUGH—Lottie Hawkins Lynch, 92, passed away Friday, Jan. 30, 2015, at Presbyterian Home of Hawfields. She was born in Orange County, the daughter of the late William Walter Hawkins and the late Lottie Mae Rountree Hawkins. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John Rainey Lynch; sisters, Nannie Odom and Sarah Norris; and brothers, Willard, Frank and Alvin Hawkins.
MEBANE—Wade Vernon Bradshaw, 88, of 6915 Bradshaw Quarry Road, died Jan. 22, 2015, at his residence. A native of Orange County, he served in the U.S. Army 175th Military Police Battalion Company A from 1950 to 1952. He retired from the N.C. Department of Transportation, Orange County Maintenance Department, after more than 60 years of service.
HILLSBOROUGH—Pauline Riley Clayton, 98 years of age, passed away Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015, in Hillsborough.
HILLSBOROUGH—Lifelong Democrat, diehard Duke fan, in absentia parent of many a forlorn Duke student or high school friend of her kids, hostess of innumerable memorable dinner parties, teller of tall tales, keeper of the Akavit, avid quilter and gardener, stern grandmother, wife and mother, Sharlene Greenae Pilkey passed away on Jan. 14, 2015. Her body failed, but her mind never did. Proud of her Alaskan heritage, she was born and raised in a small fishing village, Petersburg, Alaska, where she lived the adventurous childhood one would expect in the remote and beautiful north country. Her high school student body traveled by fishing boat to other villages for athletic contests, and she often helped her storekeeper father deliver groceries in a small skiff to outlying cabins. She has recounted her life growing up in Alaska in a family cookbook. She “came down” to go to Washington State University where she met future husband, Orrin, on a blind date. They celebrated their 60th anniversary this past New Years Eve. Sharlene and her family arrived in Hillsborough in 1965, and she immediately became involved in the community’s integration struggles. Later, in succession, she became a member of the Orange County ABC board, the Orange County Planning Board and the Orange County Board of Adjustment. She leaves behind her husband and five children, Charles, Linda, Diane, Keith and Kerry, six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
DURHAM—Gaynelle Gann High, 86, of Orange County passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2015. She was the daughter of the late James Reece Gann and Helen Lowe Gann. She attended Lowes Grove High School. She worked for Blue Cross Blue Shield in the mailroom, also Gann Hosiery and was a homemaker. She was a member of Lowes Grove Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Woodrow High and a brother, Sterling Gann.
GREENSBORO—Thomas Shaw Kenion Sr. passed away Jan. 6, 2015 at Moses Cone Hospital. Born in Durham June 3, 1935, Tom grew up in Hillsborough.
CEDAR GROVE—Frances Milliron Liner passed peacefully in her sleep the evening of Thursday, Dec. 11, 2014. Mrs. Liner was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother whose life was guided by her deep Christian faith and filled with her devotion to and love for her family.
HILLSBOROUGH— Mrs. Robert C. Hendry, 56, died Sunday morning at her home. Mrs. Hendry was born in Washington Co., Arkansas, the daughter of the late Greta Stangeland Mack and the late Leslie Mack.
hillsborough—Peter Richard Kramer died peacefully at his farm on Sunday, Dec.7, surrounded by his daughters and wife following a three-year journey with esophageal cancer. Born in New York City on March 31, 1951, Kramer graduated from Eastchester High School in New York and attended Duke University and UNC.
HILLSBOROUGH—Daniel “Calvin” Wilson Wagner, 81, went home to be with the Lord on Nov. 7, 2014.
BURLINGTON—Gail Edward Gephart, 88, of Burlington for the past seven years, died Oct. 17, 2014, at home. A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. on Saturday Nov. 22, 2014, at The Oaks of Alamance, 1670 Westbrook Ave. in Burlington, as long as the Tar Heels are not playing.
MEBANE—Mrs. Nealie L. DeWald, 99, died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2014. Born in Truetlen County, Ga., she lived in Apopka, Fla., for many years and in Van Nuys, Calif., for several years. She moved to North Carolina in 1971 and lived here since. She was office manager for Carolina Activities, Inc., until her retirement in 1990.
OAK ISLAND— Nancy Brown Wagoner of Oak Island, previously of Hillsborough, died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2014, after an extended illness.
DURHAM— Bryant B. Roberts, born Oct. 12, 1942, of Durham, succumbed to pancreatic cancer and died peacefully in his sleep at the Duke Hock Family Pavilion, surrounded by his family on Oct. 26, 2014.
HILLSBOROUGH—Evangelina Teixeira passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by her loving family, on Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2014. Evangelina was born in Sao Miguel, Azores, Portugal, in 1920 and immigrated to the United States in 1969. Evangelina was widowed in April of 1974 when her husband, Francisco, passed away. The couple was blessed with nine children, Evangelina and her twin, Francisco, deceased shortly after birth; Francisco, deceased; Eduarda; Merces; Guilherme, deceased; Conceicao; Jose; and Grace.
Raleigh— Lida Virginia Payne Haines, 97, passed away Thursday, Oct. 16, 2014, at Sunrise Assisted Living. She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard Payne and Louise McClintock Payne; husband, George Cyril Haines, and a son,Michael Haines. She was a retired nurse.
Erwin—Wesley Wayne Pope, 37, died unexpectedly Sunday, Oct. 19, 2014, following a brief illness. He was born in Cumberland County on May 18, 1977, to Louis and Marsha West Pope.
Cedar Grove—Harriet Bleich Sims , 86, passed away Sunday, Oct. 12, 2014, at her home. She was born in Clay, N.Y., daughter of the late William Henry and Johanna Bleich. She is survived by her husband, Richard, her three daughters, Melody Rodgman of Durham, Marcia Luden of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Michele McNeil of Eagan, Minn., and 10 wonderful grandchildren. HILLSBOROUGH— Debra Jordan Braxton, 59, of Hillsborough died Saturday morning Oct. 4 in Myrtle Beach, SC as a result of injuries sustained in a traffic accident. She was born in Smithfield on Jan. 8, 1955 to Ella Thompson Jordan Price and the late Thomas Wright Jordan. Debbie was a retired educator with 30 years of experience in Orange County schools. She was currently a realtor with Coldwell Banker in Hillsborough.
NEW brunswick, Canada—Jean-Paul Melanson passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014, after a battle with lung cancer.
Mebane—Johnny “Gabby” M. Melton, of Mebane, passed away Sept. 11, 2014, at Alamance Regional Medical Center. His wife, Marty Shambley, was by his side along with two of his friends, Norman Thompson and Skippy Godfrey.
Mt. OLIVE—Charles Richard Blackwelder, 72, long-time Mount Olive resident, passed away peacefully Wednesday evening, Sept. 17, 2014, while at Kitty Askins Hospice Center. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Blackwelder, who lived in Hillsborough; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Caldwell and Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Blackwelder; and a brother, Joe Blackwelder, who was from Lexington.
ORANGE COUNTY— Robert E. Lee Sr., 86, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2014, at his home. He was born in Orange County to the late Zero Lee and the late Annie Proctor Lee.
HILLSBOROUGH—Lewis Turner Gravette, a lifelong resident of Hillsborough, peacefully passed away on Sunday, Aug. 31, 2014, at his home after a brief illness. Born on June 4, 1925, to Rosa Lee and Tennie Gravette, he spent his younger years living in the Mill Village in West Hillsborough.
HIGH POINT— Judith W. Johnson, long-time resident of the High Point area, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Aug. 25, at North Carolina Baptist Hospital. Born Jan. 21, 1941, in Columbus County to Will and Mattie Watts, she met the love of her life, James (Jim) Stanfield Johnson at the Historic Colonial Inn in Hillsborough and married in 1960.
Orange County—Mozelle Cornelius Poole Cearnal was born on Sept. 26, 1919, in Orange County to the late David Elijah Poole and Lillian Bradsher Poole. She was called to her eternal heavenly home on Aug.18, 2014, at her home.
