William Duncan Reid, 93, formerly of Hillsborough, NC, Awendaw, SC, Rumson, NJ, and Glen Ridge, NJ, died after a fall and ensuing complications on June 25, 2019. He was the son of Carolyn Little Reid and Armour Lionel Reid, longtime residents of Glen Ridge.
During World War II he trained at Fort Bragg and served in the Italian theater. After the war, he attended Rutgers and the University of Vermont. In a single week, he graduated, landed a job with the American Cyanamid Company where he stayed for the next 35 years, and married the love of his life, Gwenyth Earp-Thomas Reid, who survives him. He also is survived by a son, Scott, and two daughters, Robin and Holly, and their families including four grandchildren.
As a lover of nature and the outdoors, he was actively involved in environmental causes and saw climate change as our biggest challenge in the years to come. He enjoyed bird-watching, sailing, swimming, vigorous outdoor work, and was devoted to his family. The family requests that any donations in his name be made to your local environmental organization, the Union of Concerned Scientists, or the National Resources Defense Council.
