Dewey Harry Pope

Dewey Harry Pope, 86, of Cedar Grove, NC passed away peacefully at home on August 7, 2020.

Harry was born July 3, 1934 to the late Dewey and Mabel Pope.  He was born in Durham, NC but spent 81 years as a member of the Cedar Grove community.  He graduated in 1952 from Aycock High School, attended Croft Business School of Durham, NC and served six years in the North Carolina National Guard.

Harry married the love of his life, Rachel King Pope, October 26, 1957 and spent 62 years building a life together.  Those years included raising two children, Deborah and Mike, welcoming a daughter-in-law, Leslie and cherishing their two grandsons, Landon and Lawson.  Harry was passionate about the UNC Tarheels and the Boston Red Sox but his true passion lay in watching his “boys” play ball.  His original boys were part of the Cedar Grove Community Baseball League that he helped establish and included his son, Mike and friends.  He coached those boys as part of the Cedar Grove league and continued to coach them as they grew and traveled with baseball.  He often ran into young men that remember those years and his influence on their lives fondly.  In later years, he became an avid fan of his grandsons and never missed a baseball or basketball game, keeping a chair in the van to always be ready. The successes of all of his boys have brought immeasurable joy to his life.   With over 30 years of service, he retired from the US Postal Service of Hillsborough, then spent his retirement years collecting and selling antiques while making many friends along the way.  He was dedicated to his community, his church and his family by his humble service, his loyalty and his love.  His faith was evident in his daily walk. Harry was a devoted member of Cedar Grove United Methodist Church where he served in many capacities.

Harry is survived by his wife, Rachel King Pope of Cedar Grove and his children, Deborah Pope of Durham, Mike (Leslie) Pope of Cedar Grove, grandsons, Landon and Lawson Pope of Cedar Grove; and brothers, Joe (Judi) Pope of Cedar Grove, Marvin (Diane) Pope of Mebane and Jimmy Pope of Carolina Beach and many nieces and nephews.

Due to COVID-19, a graveside service will be held Wednesday, August 12, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at Cedar Grove United Methodist Church.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cedar Grove United Methodist Church at PO Box 138, Cedar Grove, NC 27231.
