The Historic Hillsborough Commission, which owns and operates the Burwell School, is most appreciative of your recent article on Elizabeth Keckly and her connection to our historic site. Knowing and remembering our history prepares us to move into the future. While the Burwell School was remarkable in providing rigorous education to females, it was unfortunately not unique on the question of slavery and its evils. It is only by acknowledging this history that we can move forward.
The Historic Hillsborough Commission and the Burwell School are appreciative of the support of Orange County and the Town of Hillsborough. We operate through local donations and are hopeful that this unique historic place will be here for future generations to appreciate the complexities and importance of the antebellum era.
