This week’s Cedar Ridge Red Wolf of the Week is senior pitcher Phil Berger.
On Tuesday, Berger surrendered only four hits as the Cedar Ridge baseball team defeated defending Big 8 Champion Chapel Hill 3-2 on Tuesday night at Tiger Field. Berger threw a complete game, striking out eight while surrendering two runs, both unearned. At the plate, Berger knocked in the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly in the 5th inning.
In each of the past two seasons, Berger has won eight games. As a junior, he went 8-3 with a 3.17 ERA. He struck out 41 batters while walking 18.
In his sophomore season, Berger finished 8-2 with a 1.73 ERA. He helped the Red Wolves host a state playoff game for the first time since 2006, where they defeated Nash Central 4-1 on May 10, 2017. Berger was an All-Big 8 Conference pitcher each of the past two seasons.
Last year, he helped the Red Wolves finish in 2nd place, earning an automatic trip to the state playoffs. Berger started his senior season with a 10-0 victory over Oxford Preparatory on February 28. Against the Griffins, Berger threw five hitless innings, earning a shutout. At the plate, he went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
So far this season, Barber has struck out 32 batters and has walked only eight in 24 innings of work. On Tuesday night, Berger went for the 20th victory of his high school career against crosstown rival Orange. In addition to playing baseball, Berger played football for Cedar Ridge in 2017.
