The final Orange Panther of the Week for the 2018-19 academic year is sophomore sprinter Keanu Mims.
On Friday at the NCHSAA 3A State Track & Field Championships at Irwin Belk Track in North Carolina A&T University, Mims ran the opening leg for Orange’s 4x400 relay team. In the final event of the day, Mims, Thomas Kaltenbach, Jose Torres and Cameron Michalski completed the race with a time of 3:28.63. They finished tenth in the state.
Running individually this season, Mims won two meets in the 100 meter dash. On March 7, he set a new personal best of 11.39 seconds in a meet against East Chapel Hill. He also finished first in a tri-meet against Chapel Hill and Southern Durham on March 14. Also on March 7, Mims set a new personal best when he won the 200 meters, finishing with a time of 23.50 seconds.
Mims ran the indoor season last winter.On January 19 in the East Chapel Hill Polar Bear Meet #3, Mims set a new personal best in the 55 meters. He also ran the 300 meters, where he came in fourth during another meet at ECHHS.
Mims competed in three different relay teams for the Panthers this season, his first at Orange.
In the Big 8 Championships at Southern Durham High on April 24, he teamed with Kaltenbach, Gasiah Drewery and Omarion Lewis to finish fifth in the 4x100 relay.
Last summer, Mims transferred to Orange from East Chapel Hill. During his freshman season at East, he played on the junior varsity football team as a wide receiver and defensive back.
