Alvis Monroe Whitted Jr. peacefully went to be with his Lord Jesus Sunday, April 25, 2021. Born in Wake County, Mr. Whitted was the son of the late Alvis Monroe Whitted, Sr. and Hattie Parker Fish Whitted. The son of Southern Baptist and Evangelical missionaries, he was immersed in the Christian faith from an early age which supported him throughout his life. Mr. Whitted was preceded in death by his wife, Elena Perez Whitted.
Mr. Whitted grew up in Fuquay Varina, NC. He attended North Charleston high school in Charleston, SC and was elected president of his senior class. He was an accomplished athlete, receiving an offer to play basketball at Duke University and Appalachian State. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Appalachian State University and earned his masters degree from Western Carolina University. He pursued additional graduate work at UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke Divinity School. Mr. Whitted served for over 30 years as a principal and social worker with the State of North Carolina at the C.A. Dillion Youth Development Center in Granville County.
Mr. Whitted is survived by his daughter, Jan Whitted Oldenburg (Lawson Oldenburg), his daughter, Cheri Whitted Bowers (Robert Bowers); his son, Alvis Monroe Whitted III; his sister, Molly Whitted Messer; stepdaughter, Elena Hunter; and grandchildren, Thys Whitted Oldenburg, Téa L. Bowers, Luke A. Whitted and Benjamin L. Whitted.
Mr. Whitted was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was kind, humble, patient and encouraging to everyone. His volunteer service included Duke University Athletics, the Durham Crop Walk and Meals on Wheels. He served as a greeter and deacon at his lifelong church, Pilgrim UCC in Durham, NC. Mr. Whitted described a most life-changing event as re-dedicating his life to Christ at the 1957 Billy Graham revival in Madison Square Garden, NY.
A private funeral service will be held at Clements Funeral Home, Hillsborough, NC. Interment will be in St. Matthew Catholic Church Cemetery, Durham.
